Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya has opened up about the early days of his relationship with his wife, Kenyan content creator Miss Trudy, and the Shatta Wale song that became part of their story.
According to Graphic Online, which credited Joy Entertainment, the travel vlogger spoke on Joy Prime's Prime Time show with host George Quaye.
Wode Maya said he was honest with Miss Trudy from the start about where he was in life. He recalled telling her: "I don't have anything right now, but believe me, we're going to make it."
He said her belief in his dreams at a time when he had little to show inspired him to write two songs, one for his mother and one for her.
After winning her heart, Wode Maya said, he serenaded Miss Trudy with "Freedom" by dancehall star Shatta Wale. He explained that he had become a big fan of the musician and listened to the track every day, so it naturally became part of their relationship, according to the report.
The anecdote adds a playful twist to the story of one of Africa's best-known creator couples, and shows how Ghanaian music often finds its way into the personal lives of fans far beyond the country's borders.
Wode Maya, whose real name is Berthold Kobby Winkler Ackon, is one of Africa's most-watched travel vloggers. He built a large following on YouTube by documenting life in cities and villages across the continent, with a focus on positive stories about African innovation, culture and business.
His videos often challenge negative stereotypes about Africa, and he has become a prominent voice for intra-African travel and tourism. He has also spoken about his years studying and living abroad before returning to build his career as a full-time creator.
Miss Trudy is a Kenyan YouTuber and content creator with her own large following. She and Wode Maya are among the most visible cross-border couples in African digital media, often sharing their travels, family life and business ventures with fans in Ghana, Kenya and beyond.
Their relationship has been celebrated online as an example of the growing personal and professional links between creators from different parts of the continent.
Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, is one of Ghana's most popular dancehall artistes and the leader of the Shatta Movement fan base. His catalogue includes many hits that have become anthems for his fans, and his music is widely played across West Africa and the diaspora.
Wode Maya's story is a reminder of how far that music travels, reaching listeners who connect with it in personal ways.
The interview touched on a theme that resonates with many young creators: the importance of having people who believe in you before success arrives. Graphic Online notes that Miss Trudy's support and faith in her husband's vision are presented as a key part of his journey.
Many of today's most successful African content creators started with small audiences and little money, building their brands slowly through consistent work. Wode Maya's account of telling his future wife that he had "nothing right now" will be familiar to many who are still on that road.
Stories of support behind the scenes are a big part of why audiences connect with creator couples. Fans often follow not just the content but the relationships behind it, and moments like this give a glimpse of the personal side of a public career.
For Shatta Wale fans, it is also a fun reminder of the artiste's influence: one of his songs is now part of the love story of one of Africa's best-known YouTube couples.
