For years, the rivalry between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy has been one of the biggest storylines in Ghanaian music. This weekend, Shatta Wale offered fans something few expected: a full performance of Stonebwoy's hit Putuu.
The moment came during the Volta Region edition of MoMoFest X ShattaFest, organised by MobileMoney Fintech Ltd. YEN.com.gh reports that the show took place on Saturday night, October 3, 2026, in Ho, while MyJoyOnline places the venue at the Youth Resources Centre in Adaklu. Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb also reported the performance.
According to YEN.com.gh, Shatta Wale sang Putuu word for word during a set that lasted about four hours. MyJoyOnline reports that he took the stage at around 1:00am and that the crowd, made up of thousands of fans from across the country, sang and danced along.
Clips from the night spread quickly on social media, where many fans were surprised to see the Dancehall King embracing a song by the artiste long seen as his chief rival.
Shatta Wale used the moment to speak about unity. "You cannot stop me from loving Stonebwoy; you can't stop me from supporting what Stonebwoy is doing," he told the crowd, as reported by YEN.com.gh. He added that he did not consider anyone his enemy and had no desire to fight anybody.
He also paid tribute to the Volta Region's music stars. "When we talk about superstars from the Volta Region, we mention Edem, Stonebwoy and myself," he said, according to MyJoyOnline. He urged fans to drop hatred and instead support and encourage one another.
The setting gave the gesture extra meaning. Stonebwoy is closely associated with the Volta Region through his Ewe heritage, and performing his song in front of a Volta crowd was a symbolic nod to his rival's home support.
Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are two of the biggest names in Ghanaian dancehall and reggae. Their rivalry has played out over many years through songs, social media exchanges and fan clashes. At times it has spilled over beyond music, most notably at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, where a confrontation on stage led to the event being disrupted and both artistes facing sanctions from the organisers.
Since then, there have been moments of peace and moments of renewed tension. Earlier this year, Stonebwoy publicly sympathised with Shatta Wale after a ShattaFest event in the UK was cancelled by police following safety concerns, a gesture that many fans saw as a sign of easing relations.
The rivalry has also divided fans. Supporters of both camps have often clashed online, and some have warned that the bitterness can spill over into real-world hostility. That is part of why Shatta Wale's call for unity drew so much attention.
Putuu is one of Stonebwoy's popular songs, a high-energy record that has become a favourite at shows and parties. Hearing it performed by Shatta Wale, rather than Stonebwoy, gave many fans a moment they never thought they would see.
It is too early to say whether this marks a lasting change. Rivalries in music often rise and fall, and fans have seen friendly gestures before. Stonebwoy had not publicly responded to the performance at the time of the reports.
Still, for many in Ghana's music industry, the sight of one of the country's most outspoken stars publicly celebrating his rival is a welcome one. Industry figures have long argued that unity among top artistes would help Ghanaian music compete more strongly with bigger industries such as Nigeria's.
Talk Talk will follow any response from Stonebwoy and what comes next for the two stars.
