Two cabinet ministers and one of Ghana's best-known broadcasters are about to add "Esquire" to their names. According to reports by GhanaWeb and YEN.com.gh, Communications Minister Sam Nartey George, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah and Citi FM and Channel One TV broadcaster Umaru Sanda Amadu are among the law graduates set to be called to the Bar on Friday, October 9, 2026.
They are part of a large class. Rainbow Radio Online reports that 1,568 new lawyers will be called at this year's ceremony, which the outlet describes as one of the largest single groups admitted to the profession in recent years.
Ahead of the formal ceremony, the graduates attended the traditional Call to the Bar dinner in Accra on Wednesday, October 7. Videos shared by the social media page Ghana Weekend, and reported by GhanaWeb and YEN.com.gh, showed several of the high-profile graduates at the gala. The posts carried the hashtag #63rdCallDinner.
YEN.com.gh reports that Umaru Sanda appeared in a tuxedo at the event, and that Mpraeso MP Davis Ansah Opoku and Awutu Senya East MP Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor were also at the dinner. Ghana Weekend's posts also named Ernest Apau of SWESCO among those being called, according to GhanaWeb.
Ghana Weekend noted on X that Samuel Nartey George "becomes an Esquire" after Friday, a line that was widely shared as congratulations poured in.
Sam George, the MP for Ningo-Prampram, is one of the most visible members of President John Mahama's government. As Communications Minister he oversees the country's telecoms, digital and technology agenda, and he has been at the centre of debates on issues ranging from data prices to online safety.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the MP for Ellembelle, heads the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. He has led the government's response to illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, and other land and forestry issues.
Both men are entering the legal profession while serving in senior public office, which supporters have pointed to as an example of discipline and commitment to further study.
Umaru Sanda Amadu is a veteran journalist at Citi FM and Channel One TV, known for his news presentation and reporting on politics and current affairs. His call to the Bar adds a legal qualification to a long broadcasting career. Social media users flooded his posts with congratulations, YEN.com.gh reports.
He joins a list of Ghanaian media personalities who have qualified as lawyers in recent years. GhanaWeb notes that media personality Serwaa Amihere was called to the Bar in an earlier batch in March 2026.
The Call to the Bar is the formal moment when law graduates who have completed their professional training are enrolled on the Roll of Lawyers in Ghana. According to Rainbow Radio Online, the ceremony is organised under the General Legal Council, and the new lawyers will take professional oaths, including a pledge to uphold the Constitution.
Senior members of the judiciary, leading lawyers, government officials and family members are expected to attend. Once called, the new lawyers can practise law across the country, subject to the rules of the profession.
The size of this year's class reflects major changes in legal education in Ghana. For years, critics complained that a narrow route into the profession left thousands of law graduates waiting for a chance to qualify. Rainbow Radio Online links the growing class sizes to expanded capacity at legal training institutions, which has increased the number of people completing professional legal training each year.
GhanaWeb reports that about 824 lawyers were called in the previous year. Rainbow Radio Online's figure of 1,568 for this year would mean the class has nearly doubled. The new lawyers are expected to work across public institutions, law firms, corporate organisations and non-governmental organisations.
Friday's ceremony will be a proud moment for families across the country, as well as for the public figures who have drawn attention to this year's class. For Sam George and Armah-Kofi Buah, the new qualification is likely to add weight to their work on legislation and policy. For Umaru Sanda, it opens the possibility of combining journalism with legal expertise.
Talk Talk congratulates all 1,568 new lawyers on reaching this milestone.
