Actress and broadcaster Naa Ashorkor has added a new title to a long list of roles. According to a report by YEN.com.gh, the TV3 presenter was called to the Ghana Bar on Friday, October 9, 2026, completing a legal journey she says began 14 years ago.

She was one of several well-known figures among the 1,568 law graduates enrolled as lawyers at the 63rd Call to the Bar ceremony, which YEN.com.gh reports was held at ICGC Christ Temple in Accra. Communications Minister Sam Nartey George was also called, and a KNUST alumna took home the ceremony's top academic honour.

"I started this journey 14 years ago"

Photos shared on Instagram by The 1957 News showed Naa Ashorkor in a black barrister's robe and white jabot, celebrating with friends. Speaking to the outlet as she arrived, she credited "the grace of God, a wonderful support system" and her persistence in pursuing a long-held dream, YEN.com.gh reports. She said she "started this journey 14 years ago."

The photos drew a wave of congratulations from fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry.

Who is Naa Ashorkor?

Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku is one of Ghana's most versatile media personalities. She shot to fame as an actress in Shirley Frimpong-Manso's The Perfect Picture, which earned her the Best Actress award at the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Awards. She also starred in the Adam's Apples series and has appeared in films including Scorned, Checkmate, Poisoned Bait and For Love and Country.

On radio she has hosted shows on Starr FM, Joy FM and Asaase Radio, and she works with Media General, the parent company of TV3. She has co-hosted the Ghana Music Awards and the 3Music Awards and hosted pageants including Miss Malaika Ghana. In recent years she has also moved into theatre, directing and producing stage plays in Accra.

Sam George: "To You alone, be all the glory"

Communications Minister Sam George marked his call with a Facebook post. "LORD, to You alone, be all the glory and honour. I lay it all before You!" he wrote, according to YEN.com.gh. Supporters flooded the post with congratulations, with some joking about his nickname, "Dzata".

Earlier reports by GhanaWeb and YEN.com.gh named Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah and Citi FM broadcaster Umaru Sanda Amadu among those due to be called on the same day. Awutu Senya East MP Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor was also listed among the new lawyers, according to YEN.com.gh.

KNUST makes history again

The top academic prize went to Akosua Achiaa Sarpong, an alumna of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). YEN.com.gh reports that she won the John Mensah Sarbah Award, which is presented each year to Ghana's best professional law student, and also received the prize for Best Student in Civil Procedure.

The win is KNUST Faculty of Law's 11th since 2011 and its fourth year in a row, according to the report. In 2025, KNUST alumna Latifa Teiya Fuseini won the same award. The faculty celebrated on Facebook, describing the result as "history once again" and congratulating Sarpong on her "outstanding academic success at the professional level."

The award is named after John Mensah Sarbah, the 19th-century Gold Coast lawyer and nationalist who was one of the first Africans from the colony to qualify as a barrister.

A record-sized class

This year's class of 1,568 is one of the largest called to the Ghana Bar in recent years. Rainbow Radio Online reported that the ceremony enrols graduates on the Roll of Lawyers under the General Legal Council, after they take oaths that include a pledge to uphold the Constitution. GhanaWeb reported that about 824 lawyers were called in the previous year.

For Naa Ashorkor, the moment adds law to a career that already spans film, radio, television and theatre. Fans will be watching to see whether the new qualification shapes her broadcasting work or opens a new chapter in legal practice.
